Mouse on Mars est le fruit du duo Jan St Werner et Andi Toma depuis 1994. Signé à l'origine sur le label indépendant britannique Too Pure, aux côtés de Laïka, Moonshake, Pram et Stereolab, les deux allemands se détachent rapidement des références primaires du krautrock et de la musique électronique sous influence Kraftwerk/Cluster très présentent sur leur premier E.P., Frosh, pour évoluer vers une synthèse de pop et d'IDM (l'intelligent dance music, qui deviendra plus tard l'electronica).

Le duo trouve ses repères dans un mélange enthousiasmant de dub, de comptines pop et d'électronique tourbillonnante qui sera leur marque de fabrique jusqu'à Autoditacker, troisième et dernier album de St Werner et Thomas sur le label anglais. La glitch pop électronique de Mouse On Mars séduit tout autant les amateurs de krautrock et de post-rock que les connaisseurs de ce qui allait devenir l'electronica. (le "glitch" formait à cette époque une branche à part de la techno et désignait comme la scène "bleep" et plus tard "click", une musique dansante mais chaotique ne répondant pas aux canons house ou techno, NDA).

Pierre Schaeffer et Pierre Henry présentent l'œuvre qu'ils ont signée ensemble, la Symphonie pour un homme seul, qui marque une rupture totale avec tout ce que l'on avait pu écouter auparavant : peu de mélodie, peu d'harmonie et, surtout, pas d'interprètes. Cette pièce est en effet entièrement constituée d'un agencement de sons divers et variés, difficilement reconnaissables car coupés de leur source, la musique concrète prenant comme point de départ des matériaux sonores préexistants - bruits ou sons instrumentaux produits devant un microphone -, qui sont montés et mixés : il s'agit de ce qui sera qualifié en 1966 de musique acousmatique. Pierre Henry et Pierre Schaeffer entendaient utiliser les sons en tant que tels et non pas en fonction d'un critère esthétique. Selon Pierre Schaeffer, il ne s'agissait cependant pas d'introduire le bruit dans la musique, mais de « remettre en cause l'opposition primaire entre son et bruit en découvrant la musicalité potentielle de sons habituellement considérés comme bruits ».
