Crevons l’abcès d’entrée. Oui Flying Lotus est le neveu de John et Alice Coltrane (et accessoirement le cousin de Ravi). Oui il partage avec eux une vision artistique et un don évident pour la musique. Mais cela n’est guère suffisant pour expliquer le talent d’un homme plus proche des escapades hip-hop d’un Dabrye que du jazz spiritual de tonton et tata Coltrane.

La progression musicale dont est sujet Flying Lotus peut certainement s'afficher comme l'une des plus intéressantes de ces dernières années. Cette première sortie sur Warp (pour la signature de Reset EP), qui prouve une nouvelle fois les bonnes prévisions dont est capable le label anglais, est une réussite à plusieurs niveaux. Outre une prescription plus qu'appréciable d'une bonne dose de groove spatial et d'envolées musicales planantes, la visibilité que peut proposer une structure d'une telle envergure est une aubaine pour tout artiste débutant de parvenir à s'afficher dans les esprits comme une avant-garde en devenir. Sur le chemin de cette illumination musicale, Flying Lotus est à l'image de son pseudonyme: une entité relevant autant de la graine et de ce potentiel sous-jaçent que de la fleur et de l'expression la plus pure de ce talent prêt à jaillir avec une évidente justesse.

Huit ans qu'on attendait la demoiselle Leila Arab. Après deux albums à la bidouille électronique savante, Like Weather (1998) et Courtesy Of Choice (2000), on ne pouvait que recevoir le nouveau venu l'ouïe exigeante. Pari hautement gagné pour ce disque mature, imprégné de la sensibilité et du talent ouvrier de Leila. En 2008, son univers sonore dessine un nuage électronique aux reflets mordorés, vaporeux autant que magnétiques, dans lequel les boucles saturées hypnotisent tandis que les rythmiques embarquent dans un flow moite. Une sorte d'ambient expérimental généreux et facile d’accès. Comme à son habitude, la belle tisse des nappes cérébrales, toutes proches de l'IDM, sans jamais renoncer à des teintes plus chaudes, entre soul et world music. À bien y réfléchir, la singularité de cette bricoleuse aux doigts de fée pourrait précisément résider dans cette manière à mêler exigence de la note et tempo entêtant. Sa musique, ample, balance, bouillonne, bourdonne, jusqu'à faire imploser le corps en mille particules prêtes à l'envol. Et pourtant. Souvent, l'auditeur enivré est comme rappelé au sol, la mélodie venant se calibrer aux chants des invités (la sœur Roya, Luca Santucci, Terry Hall, Martina Topley Bird…). Ainsi, l'initié passera vite les titres les plus pop (mais toujours inspirés), pour mieux chavirer sur ces instrumentaux auréolés du geste sorcier : Mollie (pluie lumineuse, noirceur envoûtante), Mettle (ou la danse macabre de squelettes perdus dans un monde au bord de la crise de nerfs), Carplos (orchestration cosmique), la reprise live et acoustique de son Young Ones (transparence symphonique). Espérons que la pertinence musicale de Leila continuera de sévir dans un XXI^e siècle à la résonance rétro...

DJ CHAMPION

Véritable phénomène à Montreal, DJ Champion marie électro et rock dans un drôle et détonnant cocktail. DJ et véritable chef d'orchestre, Champion, alias Maxime Morin, dirige sur scène une troupe de cinq guitaristes et d'une chanteuse, les G-Strings! Fantasque et explosif, le groupe enchaîne les scènes hexagonales depuis son passage aux Transmusicales de Rennes en 2005. Un son capable d'emporter n'importe quelle salle, une musique pourtant improvisée mais facile d'accès et immédiate, et une énergie colossale en live.
Pour la petite biographie, il se passionne pour la musique électronique après une "période punk", et devient DJ et producteur. Les deux s'emboîtant et se concordant au sein d'un même projet, on assiste donc à la création de Chill'Em All en 2006, premier disque de Champion. Disque électro mais bardé de riffs de guitare, mêlant les cordes hurlantes de Fugazi avec l'electro produite et lêchée des Dax Riders. Encore une preuve que le Canada est l'une des nouvelles capitales de la musique pop contemporaine !

APHEX TWIN

L'innovation pour cet album d'Aphex Twin est principalement due à la présence d'un piano préparé, tel que l'avait inventé John CAGE, auteur de musique contemporaine expérimentale. L'album propose ainsi de nombreuses pièces au piano (de facture relativement simple, SATIE avait lui aussi été évoqué comme inspirateur), "préparé", c'est à dire avec divers objets déposés sur les cordes. L'aspect rythmique du piano est ainsi mis en valeur, en lui apposant une batterie d'instruments métalliques ou divers objets "sonnant" à même les cordes. "Kladfvgbung Micshk" (à-tes-souhaits) ou "Ruglen holon" par exemple, s'éloignent ainsi très facilement du piano d’origine en associant à chaque note une sonorité différente, n'ayant parfois aucun rapport avec celle d'un marteau frappant une corde...

Tout au long de l'album, on pensera fortement à de la musique concrète. Ce n'est d'ailleurs pas la première fois qu'un tel pont est réalisé entre APHEX TWIN et la musique contemporaine, Philip GLASS avait réorchestré le titre "Icct Hedral" (présent sur I care because you do). Le résultat s'avère au final très cohérent avec l'univers de Richard D. James. L’album se pare également de quelques titres au piano sans préparation: "Avril 14th", "Petiatil cx htdui", "Nanou2" et "Kasson Dalef" sont imparables de mélancolie. Toutefois ce disque est difficilement écoutable en société, on frôlerait rapidement l'invitation à la folie...
